Suribachi, Lipped Pestle & Mortar

Suribachi literally means "grinding bowl". Use the pestle and mortar to create traditional dishes like Shiraae (mashed tofu salad) or to create delicious toasted sesame dressings.

The hand-cut grooves in the mortar bowl make grinding spices, garlic, seeds easy. The ceramic bowl has a handy lip that makes pouring your sauce or pastes out even easier.

  • Medium Size: Mortar(approx) 15.5cm dia x 8cm h
  • Small Size: Mortar(approx) 11.5cm dia x 5cm h
  • Pestle Size: 12cm / 18cm

Where it's made: The mortar is fired in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture, where Minohaki is produced. The pestle is made from dark cypress "Kiso hinoki" scraps from lumber.

  • Mortar: Microwave / Dishwasher Safe - do not put on flame
  • Pestle: Hand wash / Small imperfections may occur due to natural materials used.
